Title : Six Cadets Graduate from Leadership Academy

Six of our up-and-coming NJROTC cadet leaders successfully completed the Navy-sponsored “Leadership Academy” hosted by Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida. The program is a one-week rigorous, physical and academic training session designed to prepare mid-level cadets for leadership positions within their specific Units. On the first full day of training, each cadet must pass the physical fitness test which is somewhat grueling in itself. There are those that are sent home on the first day due to failure in this physical portion of their training. All GHS NJROTC cadets passed, as expected. Cadets were taught how to properly make their beds, fold their clothes/uniforms, and maintain clean spaces wherever they were. They also participated in training that included early morning fitness, classroom academics, water survival, ailing, and orienteering. One of the regional colleges (Georgia Military College – military bound and civilian students) provided a presentation on the value of education, and further, requirements for admission to that particular college. All of our cadets came back with stories of their experience. Graduating cadets were Crystal Dorsey-Ferreras, Steven Dolan, Eli Hazen, Angela Kirkpatrick, James Powers, and Wade Scott.  Congratulations!

Title : Oh What a Night!!!

Just as the song goes, “Oh what a night…” What a night it was for our cadets , Unit, school and community! The location of the event changed due to the Spring Concert also being scheduled for the same date, time and location! We had the gym reserved since June of last year; however, due to the expected audience for the concert, decided to be flexible and move our event to the Band Room. Although there was “standing room only,” everyone could sense the aura of expectation and excitement. All were treated to an evening of enthusiasm and joy!
After the commander presented Dr. Knobl with the Units’ fifth consecutive Department of Defense “Distinguished Unit Award,” and the Navy’s third consecutive “National Academic Championship” award, representatives from twenty external organizations presented some type of award to selected cadets. Most presented our cadets with letters or certificates and medals recognizing them for very special achievements ranging from patriotism and citizenship to exceptional academics. All told, there were more than 100 awards presented to cadets for special recognition.
Of special note were the organizations that presented select cadets or the Unit with monetary awards. Cadets receiving monetary awards in addition to their certificate and medal were as follows.

Our Unit has been recognized yet again for its great improvements by being presented with the "Distinguished Unit Award" for 2010-2011.  This is a Department of Defense award presented to only the top thirty-percent of all units in the world; it's an "all-service" competition and award.  The Area Manager sent out the list last week with his gracious congratulations to all who achieved this awesome distinction!  Another great job, cadets!

 Title : Area Managers Inspection

Our Unit's "Area Manager's Inpsection" (AMI) was conducted on Friday, April 20th with "Outstanding" results.  The Area Manager conducts inspections of all Units in Florida every other year.  Alternate years, an "Off-Site Inspection" is conducted where the commanders (Senior Naval Science Instructors) may inspect another Unit in much the same fashion as the AMI.  Commander Hebert provided Dr. Knobl and Mr. Elias (AP to whom NJROTC is assigned) with a "knock your socks off" debrief about the progress our Unit has made in recent years.  He emphasized our academic program, informing these gentlemen that Gulf is the first Unit in history to win the National Academic Exam competition three years in a row.  That was the most significant accomplishment toward being awarded another "Distinguished Unit" recognition.  Congratulations to our hard working cadets!

Title : Annual Awards Night - Date Change

We have had to change the date of our annual awards night due to recent notification that the National Academic Brain Bowl, which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia was in conflict with our ceremony.  The new date for our ceremony is Thursday evening, May 12th.  The time and location remain the same (e.g., 7:00 p.m. at GHS Gymnasium/Activity Center).

Title : 3rd Annual Buccaneer Challenge a HUGE Success!

Most of the NJROTC Unit cadets and a record number of parents helped host the 3rd Annual Buccaneer Challenge. There were approximately 800 cadets and nearly thirty instructors from schools all over Florida that participated in this "FUN MEET." Unlike the "State Sanctioned Field Meets" which demand an awful lot of time, effort and money, our fun meet offers an opportunity for the kids (and instructors) to "let loose" of the formal preparation and just have fun! There were seventeen events in which all teams participated. Trophies were awarded to the top three in each event, as well as the Top Three "Overall." In addition, there were "knock-out" drill competitions all day where the winner of each "session" won a medal. Each of the medalists then competed for the "Knock-Out Champion" trophy at the end of the day. Many "thanks" go out to all the parents who helped organize and run the concession and hospitality suite areas! The event would not have been nearly as successful without them. Thank you to all!!!

Just when we thought things were close to the best we could expect in various year-long competitions for the NJROTC, one of the two BIGGEST prizes was once again won by our cadet Buccaneers! The team of five cadets participated in the Secretary of the Navy sponsored National Academic Exam competition and won an unprecedented third consecutive title! More than 1600 teams from the United States, Europe, Japan and Guam participated. National champions include Cody Boyet, Robert Merker, Wade Scott, Bianca Olmo, and Steven Dolan. Congratulations on this HUGE achievement.!

Title : Gulf Cadets do it Again!!!

Our cadets traveled to Oviedo on March 4th, in preparation for the 2011 State Championship.  The goal for this year was to do well enough to place "4th Overall," (twenty-four teams) one better than the previous year and two better than the year before that.  Dr. Knobl provided an online statement that showed how proud he was of this Unit and the competition teams participating at the State level.  He traveled on Saturday to watch the team perform in front of approximately 1200 competitors and their supporters.  The team did not let him down!  Of note, our Academic Team placed 2nd of twenty-four, 3rd in Color Guard, 4th in team Sit-Ups, and 5th Overall in Athletics.  Cody Boyet placed 4th in Academics with a score of 86; Krystene Wills placed 3rd in Female Sit-Ups, and Britnee Hogarth 3rd in Female Push-Ups.  This HUGE effort helped put the team ahead of the team that edged them out last year by minimum points - Central High School.  This year, we edged them out by three points!  We are the State's alternate for the 2011 National Championship.  If any of the top three teams, Boca Raton, Winter Park, or Flanagan drop out, then Gulf is the state's third team to compete.  Congratulations to a very successful year, cadets!!!  Next year - 3rd!!!
